It may be possible to pay for our services with your Health Savings Account (HSA), Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) by requesting a personalized receipt (i.e. superbill). In discussing plan coverage, you can tell your provider that our services include biometric/genetic screenings that are taken with a blood sample and analyzed by our 3rd party CLIA/CAP accredited partner lab. The biomarkers that the lab measures and analyzes can be found in Analytics. Biometric/genetic screenings and nutritional services, like those provided by 3natural Bionutrition, are usually covered by insurance as a "qualified expense". The IRS defines a qualified expense as one whose primary purpose is "to alleviate or prevent a medical, physical or mental disability or illness." "Medical care" expenses as defined by IRS Code, Section 213(d) include amounts paid for the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of disease, and for treatments affecting any part or function of the body. The expenses must be to alleviate or prevent a physical defect or illness. The entirety of these IRS definitions are listed in this archive. Contact your insurance provider to discuss coverage and options. Questions regarding reimbursable health care expenses should be referred to a tax consultant.
Guidance provided by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in Publication 502 suggests that under certain circumstances individuals may be able to use funds in their Health Savings Accounts (HSA), Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) to cover the costs of participating in the National DPP Lifestyle Change and Diabetes Self-Management Training Programs. According to the IRS' guidance, individuals would need to be diagnosed by a physician with a disease such as obesity, hypertension, or heart disease to use funds in their HSA account. The IRS stipulates the following: You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay to lose weight if it is a treatment for a specific disease diagnosed by a physician (such as obesity, hypertension, or heart disease). This includes fees you pay for membership in a weight reduction group as well as fees for attendance at periodic meetings. You can't include membership dues in a gym, health club, or spa as medical expenses, but you can include separate fees charged there for weight loss activities. Individuals should consult with an HSA or tax expert to ensure any expenditure of HSA funds complies with IRS guidance.
